I have 12-year-old and a 10-year-old daughters. Both have limited e-mail access. We have two computers in our dining room. Both girls have to ask permission before logging on to the internet. We have safety controls on our computers. It’s not enough. The oldest wants more access.
Crafty Girl wants a MySpace or Facebook page. Uhhh, no, you are only 12?!?! But, “my friends have pages.” She is right about this. Everytime I log on to my Facebook account several of my daughter’s friends come up as possible friends for me. Uhh, no, I don’t want to have a 12-year-old on my Facebook list of friends.
About a week ago I saw an ad on a “mom” site for https://www.yoursphere.com/ Sounded intriguing to me, so I clicked on the link. I was immediately interested by what I saw. Here’s what I found out: Yoursphere is a social networking service that provides a safe online environment for youth 9 to 18. No one over the 18 of age is allowed on the site. Parents sign up their child/children. Parents must go through an identity verification process to prove they are who they say they are. Once a parent is approved, youth ages 9 through 18 can join.
I have signed on as a Yoursphere MomAdvocate. I would encourage any one with a child between the ages of 9 through 18 to give Yoursphere a try. My 12-year-old gave it a thumbs up…she is a hard one to please. She likes the idea of earning rewards for playing games on the site.
