Why We Are Not Shopping at Party City for Halloween Costumes

My friend and driving buddy for TypeAMom Conference, Holly, wrote about her dismay over little girl clothes and Halloween costumes here.  As the mom of two girls, I have fought the good fight against my girls wearing clothing and costumes that I deem to be slutty or offensive in someway. It’s a hard battle to fight, but I’m in it for the longh haul.

This was the least offensive of the costumes I found on Party City's website!

Last year we took all three kids to Party City. My son was fine since he chose a Darth Vader costume from the Kids’ section, but my girls are in the Junior sizes. I’ve yet to see a boys’ costume that is as offensive as the girls. The boys’ costumes I don’t like tend to be the blood and gore type — my son is 6 and not interested in them.

The costumes in the Junior section range from larger versions of kids’ costumes like angels, princesses, and fairies to costumes that are skimpy and not appropriate for a 10-year-old too big for Kids’ section.

I let both my girls look at the costumes. I insisted that both try on the costumes since girls’ costumes can be very skimpy and short — not to mention tacky!

As I was waiting for the girls to choose, I happened to notice the rack of adult costumes. I was appalled. Many are almost pornographic — a costume for two people in one…ewww. How can Party City allow this display of vulgar, inappropriate costumes in an area of the store that kids, preteens, and teens can enter?

We will not be going back to Party City — we will buy online!
