As if shedding a winter layer of fur, I got rid of my sweater collection…one sweater at a time. I arrived in the US with a suitcase full of sweaters. I had lightweight “summer” sweaters for cool days to heavy wool winter sweaters for chilly, blustery days. I had in between v-neck Benetton sweaters for mildly cold days. I had scarves in every conceivable color of the rainbow. I had three winter coats. One heavy. One medium weight. And one lightweight winter coat. Coming from England I needed to be prepared for all types of winter weather. The winters in England are no where near as severely cold as in the U.S. In my years living in England, I can remember maybe one snowfall with an accumulation of barely 1 inch of snow.

It wasn’t that British winters were bitterly cold. Far from it. Winters were actually quite mild. In fact, during I only wore a wool school blazer (jacket) and a scarf to school all winter long. British homes are cold. Very cold. It’s not unusual to be sweating outside and then come inside a British home and immediately start shivering. Brick walls. Turn-of-the-century construction. Poor central heating. My childhood homes were freezing. One was a turn-of-century house and one was modern, but both were frigid inside…hence the massive sweater collection!

Redskins Gift PackOnce I was living in the U.S. permanently I noticed that I didn’t need a sweater indoors. Or outdoors for that matter. And wearing a sweater under a winter coat was sure to mean I would pass out from overheating.  American homes are better insulated which means that heating is more efficient. But there is always room for improvement.

Insulate your wall sockets, most people I know go for the windows, doors, turning down the hot water heater but forget the outlets can leave a lot of air in.

We installed low flow shower heads, and toilets. We are working on putting new light bulbs in our home to conserve energy! This would help tremendously! Thank you for the chance!

My energy saving tip is to turn down the thermostat and use the fireplace. We have three floors so we tend to heat one more than the others. Whichever one we are all using at the time.

My tip is to open the curtains or blinds when the sun shines in the room. It really heats up the house. Also to close them in the summer when the sun is to hot.

I swear by putting plastic on your windows. At least all of your north facing ones. I watch, in the dead of winter, the plastic on our windows blow up with all of the air that’s being leaked in. It’s an amazing and affordable money saver!
