“Wacky Jewish indie-rock for kids.” – The Star-Ledger
“Mama Doni … is part ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic (for the hilarious and surprisingly insightful lyrics), part Sarah Silverman (but much cleaner and only the parts of Sarah’s show where she innocently sings her little heart out), and that adorable mom down the street who manages to wear bright red lipstick and cute track suit to put out the recycling at 6 a.m.” – KIWI magazine
Quirky, zany, offbeat, and unpredictable, The Mama Doni Band expands the horizons of traditional Jewish music with a contagious and unexpected blend of reggae, rock, disco, Latin, klezmer and “Jewgrass” – all woven together with a hip Jewish sensibility and a zany sense of humor.
Chanukah Fever is a compilation of laugh outloud songs. I listened to the songs while driving my kids to swimming and back, to volleyball and back, to soccer and back, and well you get the idea. The minivan is our family room on wheels. I’m in the van most evenings. In fact, I ONLY listen to music in the van. When I love a song I tend to play it over and over again — ask my long-suffering children. Chanukah Fever was the rare CD that entertained us all. Mama Doni is not only a good singer, but is able to bring stories of Chanukah to life through her music.
Rocking out for Chanukah, MAMA DONI will perform favorites from her album I Love Herring (& Other Fish Shticks for Kids), along with latkelicious songs from her new (November 24) release, Chanukah Fever at the December 13th concert in Rockville, Maryland. The Chanukah collection includes a wild mix of musical styles including “Latke Man,” a retro-swing pop song; “The Funky Gold Menorah,” a kid-friendly hip-hop dance tune; “La Vida Dreidel,” a Jewish twist on Latin style; and “I Say Chanukah (You Say Hanukah!),” a quirky steel drum, island-style number. Chanukah will never be the same!
Mama Doni promised plenty of surprises throughout this hip Chanukah concert, including giveaways of chocolate gelt, dreidels, CDs, and t-shirts, and opportunities for kids to boogie like a dreidel, air guitar with the band (“Latke Man” style), join in an applesauce vs. sour cream rock-along, and chime in on the eternal question of “Chanukah” or “Hanukah.”
According to Carrie Stetler in The Star-Ledger, Doni Zasloff Thomas “is proud to have a schtick. And that schtick, she says, is to ‘Jewify’ all forms of music – from country to reggae to holiday songs.” Kids’ media authority Amy Kraft, of Media Macaroni, enthused, “We were all laughing out loud … Listen as Mama Doni spreads around some challah-day spirit in her inimitable cross between Sheryl Crow and Tone Loc.”
