Knuffle Bunny? Ever heard of it. No neither had I until I saw the book on a rack at Borders. Cover was eye-catching as it was a city street with a cartoonish boy and his dad walking along the street. I almost put the book down, then thought no give it a try. I tend to judge a book by its cover, and this cover was not doing anything for me. When it comes to kids books I am more of a If Give a Pig a Pancake or anything by Dr. Seuss type of person. Knuffle Bunny was new to me and I had never heard of Mo Willems.
I opened the book, started reading, and laughed out loud. Yep, a sure sign of a good book to me. I called my 4-year-old over. Well, actually I had to drag him away from a series of books in the shape of trucks and cars. Once he and I were seated on the floor, I read the book to him. He loved it and immediately wanted to read it again. I did. He wanted to buy the book. Now I have an aversion to on the spot hardcover book purchases…always like to wait for a paperback or get a copy from the library or wait for a special occasion. I gave him the “let’s wait for Christmas”–he seemed appeased.
The book is a cute story about a little boy and his dad on a day out. The boy has a stuffed Knuffle Bunny. He loses the Knuffle Bunny on their travels. The boy is distraught about the loss of his favorite toy in the world. The dad cannot understand what the boy is trying to tell him about the lost toy. My favorite part…the mom is able to translate exactly what the boy is saying…chuckle, chuckle.
So, today is “Mystery Reader” day in kindergarten. My son does not know it, but his dad is coming to read a Mo Willems‘ book, not Knuffle Bunny, but Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. I found a soft toy pigeon at Borders yesterday…squee…and I got most of Mo Willems‘ books from the library the day before yesterday…double squee!
I know exactly what books to get my son for Christmas!
