Putting the Spotlight on Georgetown Cupcakes

A few months ago I applied to be a blogger for a travel site. The travel site — Oyster Locals Blog — wanted a D.C.-area writer to write about places of interest in D.C. Oyster is a hotel review website. As a long-time resident I wanted to share my knowledge of D.C. Through writing for Oyster Locals Blog I have learned so much more about the city that I have called home since 1985 than I ever thought I would. I saw a play and toured Ford’s Theater something I had never had the chance to do. Ditto for Georgetown Cupcakes.

Is it the size of the cupcakes? The copious amounts of icing? The delectable array of flavors?

A few weeks ago I stopped at Georgetown Cupcakes on my way to a press event at the Newseum.  As I cruised down M St., N.W., I couldn’t resist stopping at Georgetown Cupcakes, even if it meant being late to where I was headed.

Georgetown Cupcakes is a thriving business in the high-traffic D.C. shopping district. The sister-run shop is located in the heart of Georgetown, at the corner of 33rd and M Streets. The bright white exterior is in sharp contrast to the shocking pink interior. The pink walls will make you smile!

The sisters –  Katherine Kallinis and Sophie LaMontagne  — left jobs in corporate America to pursue a dream. Cupcakes! The sisters began their business in 2008 as D.C.’s first and only cupcakery. The store, now with a second location in Bethesda, MD, is a compact, well-oiled machine. From the bakery area in the back of the store to the glass walled decoration area to the checkout area, every inch of space is put to use.

On the day I visited, a crew from TLC was setting up lights and sound equipment to film for the reality show DC Cupcakes.

As I stood in line waiting my turn to place my order, I perused the cupcakes that were behind the glass beside the cashier. The chocolate looked yummy. But, what about the other cupcake that looked like chocolate – but wasn’t. Oooo, oooo, the vanilla looked delicious too. Choices, choices! A quick look at the Georgetown Cupcakes menu helped me decide what to choose for my family. One of everything!

I discovered that the following cupcakes are offered each day:

  • Chocolate — two types
  • Chocolate Ganache — my personal favorite
  • Chocolate & Vanilla
  • Vanilla & Chocolate
  • Vanilla
  • Vanilla Birthday — my kids loved the explosion of sprinkles on top of the “Birthday” cupcakes!
  • Chocolate Birthday
  • Milk Chocolate Birthday
  • Red Velvet

In addition to the daily offerings, special cupcakes are offered each day – six different flavors per day. On the day I visited,  I drooled over Carrot, Chocolate Coconut, Chocolate Hazelnut, Cookies & Crème, Lemon Berry, and a seasonal favorite…Pumpkin Spice on the unseasonably warm fall day of my visit. Georgetown Cupcakes now ships nationwide.

Georgetown Cupcakes is located at 3301 M St., N.W., Washington, D.C., with a second location at 4834 Bethesda Avenue, Bethesda, Maryland. The Georgetown store is open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Sunday
11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Same hours for the Bethesda store.

The following local hotels are close to shopping AND cupcakes!
