Kettlebell Rocks in Northern Virginia!

When I first heard the term “Kettlebell” I had no idea what it was. Kettlebell? I found out that a Kettlebell is a weight with a handle — see photo above. I participated in a Kettlebell class at Kettlebell_Strong_in_VA

Participated is not the right word. The Kettlebell workout is the first workout I have ever had where I felt in control of my body. At my health club I do the elliptical, treadmill, bike, and circuit training machines, with an occasional fitness class. But, I can tell you in all honesty that I am sometimes not sure of what I am doing. I’ll be on the elliptical and get out of sync or I’ll be on the leg press and feel as though I am going too fast. With the Kettlebell workout every muscle was used — back, legs, arms, neck, stomach. I used my thighs, butt, shoulders, and back to lift the Kettlebell. It was an all-around full-body workout. It was intense. If I lived closer to the studio, I would definitely go back for more sessions.

The video shows Darius Gilbert running a Kettlebell session. My instructor, Christina Smith, is the woman in the Dynamic Solutions tanktop. Crank up the volume and prepare for the Kettlebell experience.

Kettlebell is an overall body workout. The next day every part of my body felt sore, but in a good way. My shoulders are always tense, but after the Kettlebell workout my shoulders felt supple and not sore at all. Great outcome!

My workout instructor was Christina Smith. She was friendly and knowledgeable. She took me through the workout step-by-step. As I followed her instructions about proper lifting techniques with the Kettlebell I knew that I was doing it the right way — as my body was working in sync. Christina instructed me about the correct position of my feet, thighs, butt, and eyes — all were needed to lift the Kettlebell. After 30 minutes I was heaving the Kettlebell around very easily. Of course the Kettlebell weight I used was small at 18 pounds, but I can see with more Kettlebell workouts that I would be able to use heavier Kettlebells.

The Dynamic Solutions Kettlebell mantra is summed up on the website:

If you found this site, it’s probably because you belong here. You belong amongst the ranks of us who know that through the maze of confusion that modern fitness has become, the truth that lies behind your success remains the same. It is the same as it has been forever and always. We were meant to be built like the classic physiques of the beautiful, strong, lean, and fit people who have lived here before us. To become chiseled and lean, we do not need machines. We need heart, and a few basic tools.
