We’re a book family. We read to the kids all the time when they were little. My oldest would ask for “one more book.” And how could I say no to her sweet request. The middle child stepped it up a notch by adding the ole puppy dog eyes a long with her request for more books. My youngest would flat out say “Books!” in his baby speak.
As the youngest in the family, my son has the best of both worlds. He is at once the baby and at the same time wants to be the big kid. Nice life if you can get it! When he was first reading longer books, he quickly grew bored with basic readers, I wasn’t sure what other books to get him. His oldest sister moved seamlessly from Junie B. Jones to Magic Tree House to the American Girl series of books. The middle daughter loved the Junie B. and Magic Tree House books, but loved chapter books about animals even more.
With my son I had somewhat of a dilemma. What chapter books would he want to read? As I was dithering, he was honing in on a series of books that are part chapter book and part graphic novel. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series is from author, Jeff Kinney. First published in 2007, there are now 75 million copies of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books printed in 40 different languages.
There are 7 books in the Diary of the Wimpy Kid series: Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Rodrick Rules, The Last Straw, Dog Days, The Ugly Truth, Cabin Fever, and the newest book, The Third Wheel. Or buy a boxed set of Books 1 through 5, and then add on Cabin Fever (Book #6) and Third Wheel (Book #7). Perfect book choice for your book-loving kid, and even if your kid is not so book loving, he is sure to love the way Jeff Kinney writes and draws.
What the Kid Liked:
- Cartoons.
- Characters.
What the Mom Liked:
- The books have a lead character who is a boy.
- Greg Heffley is a bit mischievous, but not with malice.
I’ll let my son sum up the first book in his own words:
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is about Greg Heffley, who is a student in Middle School. He always gets bullied because everyone thinks he’s a wimp and he IS!
Also he always gets in trouble for what his brothers, (Rodrick and Manny) do. I didn’t like when Greg rooted through Rodrick’s stuff, I mean, why add that? But I loved when Greg and his friend Rowley go into a haunted house!
I was asked by the publisher of the Diary of the Wimpy Kid books to do a giveaway for my readers and who am I to say No?! So I present to you a giveaway for one lucky reader of this blog to receive ONE Diary of a Wimpy Kid book of his or her choice.
