DH and I both had knee surgery, more specifically a meniscectomy, a few years ago.
Same knee.
Same surgeon.
His was a sports injury, mine was not.
The key advice from me post surgery is:
- Follow the doctor’s postop advice to the letter.
- Drink, drink, and drink some more water.
- Set up a downstairs area to sleep if you live in a house with stairs. Even though the recovery is relatively easy, you will still be unstable and groggy for a few days. After knee surgery, I slept on a recliner with a small table beside me for my drinks, meds, and supplies. Before he left for work, my husband left me a small cooler of drinks, pudding, yogurt, and snacks.
- Meds…don’t skimp on them. After 3 C-sections, as well as gall bladder, hysterectomy, and a few other surgeries, I can assure you that you won’t get addicted. I took more pain meds for the C-sections as getting out of bed was excruciating without meds, but did not refill the original Rx. After wisdom teeth surgery, my kids each needed 2-3 days of Rx pain meds, then they switched to Motrin. Also, I timed my meds for showers and trips to doctor for follow up appointments as any movement post surgery is hard. I can assure you that you will not get addicted.
- Meds…keep a log sheet. The first day after surgery have the person who gives you your meds keep the log since you will be sleepy and groggy. It’s easy to forget when you last took meds.
